Today is World Environment Day!

This year's theme is CO 2, kick the Habit towards a low carbon economy.

We've been trying more lately to live everyday more conscious of our footprint and I thought I'd put up a few of our little efforts.

My biggest thing is I hate wasting water. When I do dishes, I fill a small bowl with hot soapy water and wash what I can with that, (refill and repeat) and rinse everything altogether at the end. It really cuts down on how long the water runs. And try using dishcloths that can be washed and reused instead of sponges. They're the perfect size for beginners and trying out new stitches crocheting or knitting.

Carry reusable bags everywhere. It's easy to remember them for the market, but what about Target, and the fabric store and everywhere else you shop? When we forget, we ask for paper bags.

Donate all old clothes and household things possible. Cut up too far gone clothes for rags. Or dishcloths. Or reusable Swiffer pads. More reusable swiffer ideas here.

And of course thrifting and yard sale-ing are recycling. repurposing thrift finds is super duper recycling.
I almost forgot! BUY LOCAL! Visit your Farmer's Market and your local small business owners. And rock etsy.

And what I think is just the epitome of reusing instead of landfilling:

What are your favourite things that you do to be Green? You know there's something you're proud of. Every little bit helps. I always want new ideas.

3 cheers for your efforts! A lot of my reducing efforts involve baking soda. Happy World Environment Day!

Drive less. Walk more. If you do have to drive, plan your trips efficiently.

When you buy things like cars, appliances, furnaces, etc. always look for the Energy Star label. It may be more expensive initially but worth it in the long run.

Make your own food, grow your own food. Between the packaging and the chemicals, processed food is nasty.

Yes! We are a one-car family now. We walk everywhere! Kurt Vonnegut called this an addiction years ago in his "Cold Turkey" article http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/cold_turkey and he was so right. We need to totally kick the habit.

Thanks for the great ideas and the inspiration. Don't forget - you can always use those cut up old clothes for QUILTS!
